It felt like a Rhydon was drilling a hole in their brain.

Ever Grande was usually a treat to deliver to, seeing as they usually didn’t have much reason to visit Hoenn’s seat of power. But, for some reason, today the bustling city was too bright, too loud, too crowded, and the overstimulation was driving nails in Locke’s head.

They found a bench and finally sat down, head in their hands. Birdie-Birdie tried to reach their lap to give some kind of comfort, but even the Delibird’s touch was too much right now, so they simply deposited their Pokémon beside them with an apologetic pat.

Locke sighed, then winced at the sound. He’d already pushed through Mossdeep and Sootopolis, leaving only the final piece of the triangle of islands on Hoenn’s eastern border to finish out his rounds for the day. That’s if he could finish it at all.

His phone soundly appeared in front of him. At some point Birdie-Birdie seemed to have pulled it out of his bag, and now was waving it at his trainer insistently. Locke took it, trying to think. He knew a couple people in Ever Grande, didn’t he?

thankfully, matias just so happens to be in ever grande on this particular day. he's just finished giving a seminar on self-defense when his phone buzzes with a text, and it only takes him a few seconds to shoot out a response.

of course. be there in ten.

he shows up in five because of virizion. when he arrives, his hair's a mess, but he slicks it back and quickly fixes it before entering the pokemon center, looking around for locke.

behind him, a small delibird follows him.

The Pokémon Center had heating and tea, and those were really the only reasons Locke put up with the noise.

He took another sip from the cup he’d been given, chamomile with honey, and cast a rueful glare at the small bag of letters and packages beside him. Ideally, he’d like for them to be gone before nightfall, but that was looking less and less likely with every passing minute.

Thankfully their savior was quick to respond, and quicker to arrive.

Locke flinched at the rhythmic chime that accompanied the automatic doors, but raised their hand to wave over the familiar face. ”That was fast,” they tried to joke, but just ended up wincing at the croak in their voice.

matias returns the wave, approaching shortly after.

"yep! took the express route with virizion."

his delibird trips behind him, plopping down onto the floor. the impact against its belly causes it to squeak a little, almost like the sound a chew toy makes.

"i'm going to guess we're going to be helping deliver some mail?"

”Virizion…?” Locke stared at the Delibird behind Matias as he sounded out the name. It fell over its own tail and Birdie-Birdie hopped down to help it.

Their attention snapped back to the older man, trying to keep the bah humbug out of their voice as they responded. ”Er, yeah. Just these last few, if it’s no trouble.” They nodded at the bag beside them, then quickly regretted it as the motion triggered another pulse of pain above and behind their right eye. They rubbed at it as they got to their feet again, struggling to gather their things one-handed.

"oh! this isn't virizion. this is just a delibird who i was hoping you could help me name."

the same way locke helped him name his many jynxes.

matias is quick to offer his help, scooping up the bag before hauling it over his shoulder. he offers a hand to help whatever locke's carrying as well, should they want his help.

"come on. virizion's waiting outside."

a single MAGICAL LEAF somehow floats into the pokemon center.

”I’ll do my best.” Though they weren’t sure how much brain power they could muster for the task. Not when they couldn’t even lift a single half-filled bag by themselves.

Embarrassment squirmed into Locke’s chest like a worm, but they quickly squashed the feeling. This was what they’d called Matias for after all. ”Thanks,” they said as they passed the bag off onto the other man, fishing out their phone to be the GPS instead.

The last time he’d seen leaves like the one appearing in the center now was at the soiree, surrounding Eva Morales as she was led to safety. There was less urgency here, but a strange anticipation began building inside of him as he followed Matias out the door.

the moment the glass doors of the pokemon center slide open, the two of them are buffeted with a gust of MAGICAL LEAVES that obscure their vision for moments. but when it eventually dies down, MAGICAL LEAVES slowly falling to the ground, who else awaits them but virizion?

with rays of sunlight behind her, virizion looks majestic, as usual.

"virizion, locke. locke, virizion."

smiling, matias approaches the grass-type and hauls the bag onto her back.

Well, it definitely wasn’t a normal Pokémon. It had a certain…vibe? He guessed? It didn’t feel like the average Pokémon when it looked at him, was what he was trying to conceptualize.

…It was weirdly similar to that bull thing that tried to gore him at Mt. Pyre.

“Oh. Hello.” Locke squeaked with a small dip of their head. Were they supposed to bow? It looked like the sort of thing that’d want you to bow. They glanced back at Matias, unsure how to approach.

virizion (-) justified - sacred sword, leaf blade, smart strike, protect, stone edge, magical leaf

weirdly similar, but different enough. maybe locke should meet with kyle lopez and his chonky (strong!) terrakion.

it's usually quite amusing to see how people react to virizion and this time's no different. he chuckles, then gestures for locke to approach.

"she says hello. she's a big fan of delibird deliveries."

a swirl of MAGICAL LEAVES whip around locke for a moment before scattering, though one MAGICAL LEAF remains. a greeting, perhaps.

matias mounts, then offers his hand to locke so they can get on as well. his own delibird struggles to get up but manages eventually.

"come on. we'll be done in no time."

Somehow knowing that only made Locke more nervous. They held the Magical Leaf between their thumb and index, a little dizzy from it all.

”R-Right!” He carefully climbed up behind Matias, amazed that Virizion could hold all of them so easily despite her graceful appearance, reaching out a hand for Birdie-Birdie to make his way squished in between the two.

with his delibird in front, he boops its head, which in turn causes his delibird to boop virizion's head.

"go!"

whoosh!

off they go.

buffeted by wind and resistance, it's only then that matias realizes he has no idea where the first delivery is. he turns back to locke, forced to yell:

"where are we going?!"

They weren’t flying but god if it didn’t feel like it. The rush of air against their skin; the wind whistling in their ears; the buildings and scenery breaking down into formless shapes and colors as they raced by.

It’d be comforting if Locke’s stomach wasn’t threatening to turn itself inside-out the second they took off.

He squeezed his eyes shut, only cracking one open just long enough to peek down at the phone clutched between Birdie-Birdie and himself. ”U-Up by the mountain! Near the cave entrance!” In the opposite direction of where they were currently speeding towards.

it definitely takes a while to get used to. matias has practice and it shows in the way he's able to enjoy the journey, stomach sitting pretty even as virizion makes a sharp u-turn after hearing locke.

"gotcha!"

they really should be wearing goggles...

a minute or two later, and they arrive at the destination, hair messy and pointy as he dismounts.

They spun around, and for the next few moments Locke’s world was a dizzying blur of sound and color. Virizion stopped just as suddenly, causing his stomach to skyrocket into his throat and his brain to rattle around in his skull like a…like a…

Well he’d think of a clever enough comparison when everything stopped spinning.

”Um…” They squinted at the GPS on their phone, which also seemed to be struggling to keep pace with the speed they’d been moving at. Eventually the little dot caught up with their current location, sounding off with an affirmative ding. ”Yeah, this is it. First couple stops’re at the base of the mountain, then the last one is…”

Locke looked up into the mountain proper. The problem area. There was no chance they would’ve made the entire hike before nightfall with their head pounding the way it was. The thought alone made them want to scream in agony.

”If you and Virizion can get to one up top, I think me and Birdie-Birdie can manage the ones down here.”
